Barcelona's players speak about new checkered design shirt
Pique says it is something new and likes that it's inspired by the city
"The kit is something new and exciting. It might be different but it is 100 percent Barca and it is even better that the design represents the bond the club has with the supporters and the people who are driving the city forward."
Those are Gerard Pique's thoughts on Barça's new kit after it was launched on Monday. The feeling of 'shock' as the Catalans switch from vertical stripes to checkered squares is mixed with excitement at something new.
The same thing happens whenever there's a revolution: the debate begins. Especially on social media. Some players, like Riqui Puig, one of the stars of La Masia, points out that, at the end of the day, it's still a Barça shirt.
"Wearing this shirt is a huge honour," he said. "Defending the colours of the clubs represents the fulfillment of a dream I have had since I was young, but at the same time, it's a privilege and an enormous responsibility. For the young players that have grown at this club and reached the first team, it's difficult to describe with words what it means to wear this shirt."
Puig added: "This is a club that takes care of its talent and develops it. The style of this club, the Barça DNA, is based on individual talent and the style of play, if we stay true to our way of understanding football, the titles will arrive."
Alexia Putellas, the Barcelona women's player, added: "This shirt encourages us to continue promoting talent. Barça is a global icon and this innovative design helps us to continue inspiring more and more young people from all over the world to overcome any barrier to achieve their dreams."
