The River Plate striker got his nickname in his early days for his way of moving the ball

River Plate have always had good forwards and the latest to come to light is Julian Alvarez, 21, known as ‘La Arana (the spider)’.

Sport Italiasay the player is on Barcelona’s radar with the Catalans desperate for goals. The star of Marcelo Gallardo’s champion River Plate, Alvarez could help with that. He has 21 in 44 games and seven assists.

La Arana has been linked with Atletico, Inter, Milan, Juve, Fiorentina, Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid. Barcelona are just the latest to join the list.

Inter have made a movement for him, trying to repeat the deal that saw them get Lautaro Martinez a few years ago.

His release clause is 25m euros, a high number for Barcelona to match given their economic woes, but easy for other teams.

Alvarez, at 11, had a trial with Real Madrid but bureaucratic problems made his signing impossible. “I was in Madrid a month,” wrote Infobae. “They came to watch from everywhere, he was way better than the opponents.

TyC Sports reported that at his first club, Atletico Calchin, the ability with which he controlled the ball led to his nickname. It seemed that he had, according to his own brother, "more than two legs when he played." hence ‘La Arana’.
