Laporta made the slip during the press conference celebrating Pedri's renewal
Barcelona president Joan Laporta confused Pedri for Lionel Messi as he presented the young midfielder's contract renewal on Friday.
"We went to the Candelaria and they were celebrating mass, the Candelaria is like the Moreneta here, it was spectacular," Laporta said as he told an anecdote about meeting Pedri's dad in Tenerife during his first stint as president.
"Even the priest was a Barça fan... It does not surprise me that Messi... sorry, Pedri, became a Barça fan in the atmosphere he grew up in.
The confusion between Messi and Pedri was quickly picked up on social media, with comments pouring in.
On Pedri's €1 billion release clause, Laporta explained: "The message we want to send is that we want him at Barca forever. The clause is €1bn but Pedri's worth much more."
Asked if this was the happiest day since returning as president, he added: "I would say so, yes. I was also happy when we won the Copa del Rey. But this is up there. It's one of those days when it's worth being Barca president, thanks to phenomenons like this kid."
