Barcelona have gone 22 years without losing at El Molinon

The last time they were beaten at Sporting, Johan Cruyff was in the team and Pep Guardiola was sent off

Luis Enrique’s Barcelona visit the oldest stadium in the Spanish top flight this Saturday, El Molinon, constructed in 1905, and somewhere the Blaugrana have not lost since September 1994, losing 2-1.

Since then they have been back nine times, with six wins and three draws. Last season they won comfortably, 3-1, with two goals from Messi and one from Luis Suarez.

The last time Sporting beat Barcelona was 4 September 1994, the first league game of Abelardo, the current coach of the club, as a Barcelona player, but although he signed for the team that summer he did not feature against the Asturians.

Johan Cruyff’s Barcelona went there in the first week of the season, with Foeman scoring, but goals from Lediakhov and Pier handed the hosts victory. Guardiola was sent off in the 84th minute for his second yellow card.

Curiously Sporting only won seven games that season, eventually descending to the Segunda in 1997-98. Barcelona finished fourth, behind Real Madrid, Deportivo and Betis.
