Lionel Messi returned from injury and scored twice but Barca still lost, conceding four goals at home for the first time in 15 years.
Junior broke the deadlock with a well-taken goal at the near post after good work from William Carvalho, before Joaquin netted the second from Cristian Tello’s cross.
Tello gave away a penalty for a foul on Jordi Alba and Messi slammed home the spot-kick, but before Barca could level, Marc-Andre ter Stegen made a rare error to give Giovani Lo Celso a goal.
Barca fought back again through Arturo Vidal but Sergio Canales once again restored Betis’s two goal lead.
Vidal teed up Messi for Barca’s third in stoppage time but there were not enough seconds remaining for the Catalans for force an equaliser.
