Suarez returned to training this week and came off the bench to fire him in the 90th minute as Barca fought back from a goal down against the Premier League side.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had opened the scoring at Camp Nou with a brilliant solo effort in the first half.

Ainsley Maitland Niles' own goal let Barca back into the game with 20 minutes to go and the home side's pressure eventually told when Suarez popped up with a winner to prevent penalties.

Ernesto Valverde handed Camp Nou debuts to Neto, Antoine Griezmann and Frenkie de Jong, while new signing Junior Firpo was also presented to the supporters before the game.

Lionel Messi made a pregame speech in his role as captain but is not yet ready for action. Like Philippe Coutinho and Arturo Vidal, he only returned from his holiday on Sunday following the Copa America.

There were few chances in the first half. Riqui Puig and Jordi Alba tested Bernd Leno but Aubameyang's goal was the difference at the break.

Valverde made seven changes at half time and Ousmane Dembele and Carles Alena both came close to equalising before Maitland Niles, under little pressure, turned the ball past Neto into his own net.

Suarez then hit the side netting as Barca sought a winner while Gabriel Martinelli came close at the other end before Barca eventually snatched the win.

Barca now head off to the United States for two friendlies against Napoli. Upon their return, thoughts turn to the real business: the league opener against Athletic Club in just under two weeks.
