Barça ended 2022 on a sour note by dropping points in the Catalan derby

Barcelona's five-game winning run in LaLiga was ended by Espanyol on Saturday in a heated Catalan derby which ended 1-1 at Camp Nou.

Marcos Alonso gave Barca the lead but Joselu's penalty earned Espanyol a point as both sides ended the game with 10 men.

Jordi Alba and Vinicius were both sent off for second yellow cards, with a third red card, for Espanyol's Leandro Cabrera, overturned by Mateu Lahoz, who once again lived up to his reputation.

By the time the final whistle went, Alonso's seventh-minute opener seemed a long time ago. The defender turned home Robert Lewandowski's flick on from a corner.

Barca bossed the first half without really creating too much. Raphinha was wasteful, although he did force one save from Alvaro Fernandez from distance.

Not scoring a second was always likely to haunt Barça and that proved so when Alonso was penalised for catching Joselu's heel inside the box.

Joselu rolled home the resulting penalty, taking his tally to eight for the season and drawing Espanyol level.

Alba was then sent off as Lahoz started dishing out cards left, right and centre. A second booking followed for Vinicius, too, and a red for Cabrera.

Upon review, though, Cabrera's dismissal was overturned for what at first appeared to be a stamp on Lewandowski.

There was still time for Fernandez to produce fine saves from Andreas Christensen and Lewandowski as Espanyol held on for a precious point.

For Barça, it mean they are now back on level terms at the top with Real Madrid, who beat Real Valladolid on Friday.
