"We thought that if they checked it, it could possibly have been a penalty"

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde was asked about the penalty which wasn't in his side's 2-2 draw at Real Sociedad at the weekend.

Gerard Pique appeared to have his shirt pulled bu Diego Llorente and Merino in stoppage time but the referee didn't even refer the incident to VAR.

It wrangled more because La Real had earlier been awarded a penalty in very similar circumstances.

Ahead of Wednesday's Clasico, Valverde was asked about the incident again: "It was clear that with arrival of VAR the controversy wasn't going to end because football and controversy go together.

"Each person always sees things from point of view. With this Pique incident, it's true that we thought that if they checked it, it could possibly have been a penalty. But they didn't. I don't have much more to say in that respect."
