Barça's perfect European record in semi-finals after winning first leg
In the previous two occasions that Barça won the first leg of the semi-final at home, against Hamburg and Bayern, they made it through to the final
FC Barcelona are on course to make the Champions League final at the Wanda Metropolitano next month. They beat Liverpool 3-0 in the first leg of their semi-final clash and history suggests that will be enough to see them go through.
Barça have twice won the first leg of a European semi-final, once in the old European Cup and the other in the Champions League. On both occasions they went through to the final.
The first time this happened was in 1960/61. Barça beat Hamburg 1-0 at home but lost 2-1 in Germany. This was back when away goals didn't count as double so a third match was played in Brussels and Barça won 1-0. They would go on to lose against Benfica in the final.
The other time was much more recent. Luis Enrique's side beat Pep Guardiola's Bayern 3-0 thanks to a fabulous display from Lionel Messi in 2014/15. Barça would lose 3-2 in Germany but go through to the final on aggregate where they beat Juventus.
In total Barça have been involved in 16 European Cup/Champions League semi-finals and they've won through on eight occasions and lost on eight occasions. The contest against Liverpool will break that record and everything suggests Barça will add an extra game to the win column.
