One of Ajax's biggest stars suggests he isn't happy playing in the Eredivisie

The current Ajax captain, Matthijs de Ligt, has admitted that the Eredivisie has been left behind in world football. After beating Excelsior 7-1, De Ligt acknowledged that the difference between the top sides in the Dutch league and the rest is so great it's hard to remain motivated. It's only in the Champions League where the defender is fully focused on achieving things with Ajax.

"To be honest, we didn't play at 100% but we won 7-1," De Jigt told FOX Sports. "The difference between the sides in the Eredivisie right now is huge. The tension is less each time as there's only two teams who are racking up the points. If we keep winning it won't be a problem but we have to admit that it's less fun."

In that regard, De Ligt says the Champions League is completely different. "In the Champions League you feel valued. You have to give everything and those feelings are hard to find in the Eredivisie. There's a lot more competition," concluded De Ligt. The defender has been linked with a move to various sides in Europe including Barcelona.
