Barça president Joan Laporta: The club is worse off than I thought

Laporta knew he was inheriting a club in crisis but he didn't know how bad things were

Joan Laporta faces his first Assembly on Sunday with the great unknown being the real numbers of the club from the Josep Maria Bartomeu era.

Ahead of that, Laporta has spoken to La Vanguardia about the club's financial situation.

"The club's in a worse state than I expected -- and I knew I was coming into a difficult situation," he said.

"We will explain everything because if not, we will be complicit. The same things appear in all the contracts. When I say the club's in a worse position than I expected, it's because there are contracts that condition us a lot."

For now, Laporta and the club will wait for the results of the audit and then calls for explanations: "There are things that have to be explained [by the previous board] and I don't rule out taking some sort of action."

Laporta added: "We've encountered a squad with old-fashioned contracts and we will have to work out what to do.

"The existing contracts can be changed or restructured. After that, there are more drastic measures that we hope we don't have to adopt."

However, he added that "nothing's ruled out if it's for the good of the club. Between salaries and amortisations, it's about €650 million [annually], which is more than the club's revenue. These salaries are out-of-step with the current market."
