Barça's MVP Fermín López: I've been working for this all my life

The midfielder was the star of the show in the 2-1 win against Shakhtar on Wednesday

Barcelona overcame Shakhtar Donetsk in the third matchday of the Champions League group stage on Wednesday. The Blaugrana, have now won three games in the top European competition, secured a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Ferran Torres and Fermín López, who had a great game and received the MVP award for best player of the match.

"It was a difficult game, it was hard for us, but in the end we were happy with the victory," Fermín told Movistar+. "The coach told us right from the start that it was a key match to seal our qualification. We have nine points and, on a personal level, I'm happy to have been able to help the team with the goal."

Asked about his 'feeling' on the pitch in Xavi Hernández's system, the player from Huelva commented that "I feel comfortable starting from the inside, either on the right or on the left." It is worth remembering that Barça's No.32 also played as a false nine and on the wing in previous matches, demonstrating that versatility is one of his strong points.

Fermín could have left the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys with more than one goal: he crashed two balls against the post and scored another, but it was disallowed for offside. This offside goal was scored with a perfect header, despite being 1.74 metres tall. "I've always been a little guy, but I've had good timing," he laughed.

The case of Fermín is one of the most surprising in the squad, given that last season he went on loan to Linares. During pre-season he convinced Xavi and he has become a regular in the squad since. "You never expect it, but it's what I've been working for all my life; I thank Xavi and the club for their confidence", he said.
