Barça lose Ronald Araujo to injury in Liga game against Real Betis

The defender was taken off early in the first half with an ankle problem

Really, really bad news for FC Barcelona. Ronald Araujo got injured in the early stages of Sunday's league game against Real Betis and had to be taken off.

In a moment when Barça need centre-backs, with Gerard Pique out of combat, Araujo has stepped up and made himself the club's outstanding defender this season.

Coach Ronald Koeman has shown a lot of faith in him, starting him week after week and preferring him to Samuel Umtiti and Clement Lenglet.

For that reason, with big games coming up, that's why the injury is such bad news for the Catalan club.

Araujo appeared to injure his ankle passing the ball up the line and had to be taken off. He was clearly in a lot of pain.

Despite Umtiti being on the bench, Frenkie de Jong was chosen to come on to partner Lenglet in the middle of the back four.
