The move of Memphis Depay to Atletico means the Catalans have lost a forward

A calm winter window was expected at Barcelona but Memphis Depay’s move to Atletico Madrid has left Barcelona looking for a new back up forward. Xavi will start the second half of the season with one less attacker unless the club can make a new signing.

Barcelona signed Ferran Torres, Aubameyang, Adama Traore and Dani Alves last winter. Traore came from Wolves on loan and that’s the kind of deal Barca are looking at.

They want a cheap forward who would be happy to be back up, whose club would allow him to leave - difficult.

For now, no names have come up. Aubameyang at first offered himself to Barca but the option was discarded because he cannot be registered again n the same season.

Barcelona tried to sign Yannick Carrasco, but Atletico said no. Instead they got an option to buy in June for 20m euros.

It’s true that the club could end up without bringing in anyone - instead they can work on registering or agreeing contracts for Inaki Pena, Araujo, Balde and Gavi within the fair play room generated by Memphis’ departure.
