FC Barcelona officially announced on Tuesday the departure from the club of Markel Zubizarreta, until now sporting director of Barça Femení. Zubizarreta was under contract with the club until 30 June 2024.

Barça released a statement in which they thanked Zubizarreta for his work over the years, highlighting "that he has been a key player in the creation of the best women's football team in Europe, his dedication and wishes him the best of luck in the future, both personally and professionally."

In his farewell message, the club recalled that "Zubizarreta has been the architect of a triumphant Barça side, where he landed in 2015 as head of sports management and, in the summer of 2017, became the sporting director. In these six seasons, the team has become one of the benchmarks in Europe."

The prestige that the Barça team has achieved at international level is commensurate with the impressive track record accumulated. "During Markel Zubizarreta's time as head of sport, the women's team has won a total of 16 titles, including 4 Leagues, 2 Champions Leagues (2021 and 2023), 4 Queen's Cups, 3 Super Cups and 3 Copes Catalunya."
