Barça denied clear penalty as Gavi barged to the ground by Rayo's Catena

The referee did not deem the clear foul worthy of a spot kick

The performance of referee Isidro Díaz de Mera was strongly criticised by the Camp Nou crowd during Barcelona's 1-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano at Camp Nou on Monday.

The loudest whistles came in the second half when the official didn't give a clear penalty for a Catena foul on Gavi as he broke into the area.

Gavi got in front of the Rayo defender to latch onto a pass from Memphis Depay and, just as he was about to shoot, Catena barged him in the back, pushing him to the ground.

Not only did Diaz de Mera not consider it worthy of a penalty, but he stopped the game due to Barça's protests and booked Ronald Araujo, letting Rayo re-start with an indirect free-kick.

There does not seem to be any offside in the build-up as a Rayo player is playing Barça players onside, while no footage shows the linesman raising his flag.

In addition, the referee sent off one of Barça's kit men for their protests from the bench at the remarkable decision, with VAR not overturning the on-pitch ruling, either.
