The Argentine will watch the game from the stands in Milan

Leo Messi will not play against Inter in the Champions League. Ernesto Valverde's decided, along with the player himself and the club's medical team, to leave him out to avoid risking further injury.

Messi broke a bone in his arm against Sevilla but has been back in training for a week. He passed the final test on Monday but will watch the game from the stands. The idea is not to take any risks, so it's not clear if he will play against Real Betis at the weekend or wait until after the international break.

The Argentine's recovered well from an injury which the club said initially would sideline him for three weeks. Last week he returned to training, 10 days after the Sevilla game, and this week has been getting his fitness up. Despite that, Barça don't want to risk another knock on the arm in question -- the risk was deemed too high.

Valverde took a squad of 22 to Milan but left the decision over Messi until the final minute. Denis Suarez and Munir El Haddadi were among the other players not to make the final squad.
