Barça coach Koeman reiterates: Making signings now is important

The Dutchman wants Barça to sign a defender and a forward if possible this month

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has always pushed the need for signings to be made in January. He felt the squad was left short in the summer and needs to be strengthened. He hasn't said what players he wants, but on Friday he once again insisted that new arrivals are needed.

"For the immediate future it is important to make signings," he said. "We want to improve the squad and I still think in some positions we need more competition and effectivity."

It's clear that Koeman wants a centre-back, as he doesn't count on Samuel Umtiti and has been left short by the injury to Gerard Pique, and a forward. Despite that, though, the Dutch coach is realistic about the limitations at the club at the moment.

"I think we should sign players but I understand the club's situation," he added. "If it's not possible, it's not possible, and we will have to sign in the summer instead."

Barça have 20 days left to make decisions. They have already opened talks to sign Eric Garcia and Memphis Depay, players who are out of contract with Manchester City and Lyon respectively in the summer, but will have to wait until Jan. 24 when a new president is elected before making decisions.
