Barça coach Koeman's options to rest Pedri against Granada this week

| sport

The young midfielder has played more than anyone imagined in his first season at Camp Nou

Pedri has played 3,239 minutes for Barcelona this season and it's been nearly three months since he didn't start a game for the club.

A lack of rest has seen him lose a bit of freshness in recent weeks. Pedri's played more games this season (47) than anyone else at the club, followed by another midfielder, Frenkie de Jong (46).

Until now, Barça coach Ronald Koeman hasn't wanted to touch the spine of the team. Especially recently with Barça right back in the title race -- in fact, they will go top if they can beat Granada on Thursday.

However, rotations against Granada haven't been ruled out and Koeman has a number of options if he decides to give Pedri a break. Seeing who has come off the bench most often recently, the first option is Ilaix Moriba.

Ilaix has played in the last eight league games and in total has now played 386 minutes of football with the first-team, scoring one goal and setting up three more.

The academy graduate's performances have convinced Koeman that he deserves a bigger role than other players, such as Miralem Pjanic and Riqui Puig, who have both suffered as a result of Ilaix's emergence.

Another more conservative option would be to bring in Sergi Roberto, who can also play in midfield and has been given minutes in recent weeks since returning from injury.

Koeman could also return to a front three, reunited Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele in attack, maintaining the back three but tinkering with the system slightly, making it more of a 3-4-3.
