The Arsenal boss brought Cesc Fabregas to Arsenal but was in talks over Messi

Arsene Wenger, the former Arsenal coach, revealed in a chat with beIN Sports that he came close to signing Lionel Messi back in the day, something he wishes could have been different.

"In life you have to live with regrets, failed negotiations and one of them was Messi," said the coach.

“We were in discussions with him when we bought Fabregas, because Messi played (with him).

“You realise sometimes what fantastic youth teams you had before, when you’re a club like Barcelona. In the same team, Messi, Pique and Fabregas.

"Pique and Fabregas came to England, Messi stayed in Spain. We were interested in him, but he was untouchable at the time.”
