Macri was meeting with Vladimir Putin in Russia this week

He hopes to be back for Argentina's first two games... and the final

The president of Argentina, Mauricio Macri, said on Tuesday that "God and (Lionel) Messi will decide if Argentina win the World Cup" after meeting Russian leader Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.

Marci, the former Boca Juniors president, said: "The most important thing is to compete well and then God and Messi will decide if we can win the World Cup."

The Argentine leader arrived in Moscow on Monday for his first visit to the country, saying that he wanted to visit for a second time in June for his country's first two games in the tournament, accompanied by his daughter Antonia, and "for a third time to see the final" on July 15.

"I hope that we reach the final and that we have more luck than in Brazil," he added.

Argentina, who lost in the final four years ago to Germany after extra time, are in the same group as Croatia, Iceland and Nigeria at this summer's World Cup after qualifying by the skin of their teeth in their final group game.
