The former Barcelona playmaker spoke about his battle with depression

Andres Iniesta made his name with Barcelona. He had no economic or footballing problems. However, the Vissel Kobe player remembers parts of his career soured by a battle with depression.

The detonator was the death of his friend Dani Jarque, who went suddenly, during training, at just 26 years old. The midfielder spoke about his battle with The Wild Project.

“When I was fighting against depression, the best moment of the day was when I took my pills and I went to sleep. I lost the will to live. I hugged my spouse but it was like hugging a pillow, you don’t feel anything,” said Iniesta.

The playmaker says even today he takes counter-measures against mental illness.

“I still go to therapy because I need to fix myself within myself,” he said. “I like to listen to professionals speak about mental illness and depression. With time, life shows you that mental illness and depression can affect anybody.

“It’s not about material things because you can have all the cars in the world and anything you want but it’s still hard to face the problems in life.”

He also spoke about a return to Barcelona one day. “I would like to return to Barcelona as a coach or sporting director, but first i have to learn in different areas and later we will see,” he added.
