Iniesta was an unused substiture against Real Sociedad

The club have not said how long he will be out of action for

Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta is injured. The midfielder underwent tests on Monday which showed he is suffering from a slight claf problem.

Iniesta was an unused substitute in the win over Real Sociedad at Anoeta. He did not even get up to warm up, despite the nature of the game and Barça going 2-0 down.

The reason has now become clear, with coach Ernesto Valverde not wanting to risk him. Iniesta is unlikely to play against Espanyol in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday and is a doubt for the weekend's trip to Real Betis.

"Andres Iniesta, for his part, has a problem in his right calf and his recovery will determine his return to action for the coming matches," Barça said in a statement.

Iniesta's injury was part of a double setback, with Ousmane Dembele ruled out for three to four weeks with a hamstring problem

Samuel Umtiti and Paco Alcacer are back in training, while Philippe Coutinho should be able to return at some point in the next week or so.
