Barcelona want to sign a defender in January and the Argentine is a target

Despite the financial uncertainty and the lack of a president or executive board at Barcelona, the Catalan club are still working on the January transfer window.

One of the priorities is a centre-back given Ronald Koeman has been left short in that position so far this season following the injury to Gerard Pique.

The top target is Manchester City's Eric Garcia, although Barça also have a list of alternatives. One of them, sources have confirmed to Diario SPORT, is the Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez.

Martinez, who plays for Ajax, fits the profile the club are seeking and despite his youth (22 years old) he has experience in the Champions League and is versatile -- he has played at left-back and in midfield.

Koeman knows him well and put his name on the table when the club were discussing options in the event a deal for Garcia does not materialise next month.

Barça have sounded out a deal and despite Ajax's demands, it remains on the table. The idea Barça have would be a loan with an option to buy at the end of the season.

Martinez is in his second season at Ajax. The former Newell's Old Boys' player joined in 2019 from Defensa y Justicia for a fee of around €7 million. He has been capped by Argentina and has a contract in Amsterdam until 2023.
