A year on from Sergi Roberto's birth

A year ago today Sergi Roberto scored the goal that mattered against PSG

He arrived at pitch No 9 at the Cituat Esportiva walking. Training had finshed a few minutes ago. The boy who came from the youth academy, calm, greeting those who were waiting for him to remember that March 8 is now a date that will be celebrated every year. Like the 5-0 against Real Madrid. Or the three goals from Pichi. Lost finals and titles won. Barcelona is a club that lives on images and moments, not numbers and cold statistics. At Camp Nou the pleasure and enjoyment from the play is more seductive than digits on the scoreboard. That is, of course, part of Cruyff's legacy. Sergi Roberto gave one of those eternal moments.

"A special day," he wrote on the photograph taken by Javi Ferrandiz which immortalised the most important goal of his career (he has seven with Barca B and now seven with the first team). Seeing the photo brought back a smile that showed the same sensations he felt when the ball went into Trapp's goal. "I touched the ball with the outside part of the boot, as well as a bit of the instep," he remembered, with his eyes fixed on the photo. THe goal caused a collective ecstasy, and he celebrated with a smile that covered his face. Happiness is Sergi Roberto celebrating the 6-1 win over PSG on March 8, 2017. Few images define how Barcelona felt so well. His face only transmits joy. The same energy, clear of impurities, that a baby has when it sees its mother. No past, no present, no future.

A TRUE LOVE

Sergi Roberto didn't just complete the impossible comeback. That day he stop having to fight for his place in the first team. He gained the respect of Barcelonismo the world over. The few doubts there were over him were put to bed. This Thursday is the first birthday of the comeback, but also marks the consolidation of a child who arrived in the youth teams and fulfilled his dream. Debuting with the first team is a privilege that many cantera players have had, but arriving is just the start. To be considered 'one of our own' you have to take your hammer and bash down the wall. Sergi Roberto, with the sixth goal against PSG, turned the wall into dust.
