Luis Suarez: When a striker's on a run, you have to take advantage

The former Barcelona forward's goals are firing Atletico towards the title

Luis Suarez took his tally in La Liga this season to 14 goals with a brace in Atletico Madrid's 4-2 win away at Cadiz on Sunday.

The former Barcelona striker is the outrught Pichichi in the league and his goals are firing Atletico towards the title for the first time since 2014.

Atletico's win on Sunday moved them 10 points clear of second-placed Real Madrid -- and they still have a game in hand.

Speaking after the Rojiblanco's latest victory, Suarez said: "We knew how difficult Cadiz were going to make it at their place. They look to cross the ball into the box with a player who showed his quality in (Alvaro) Negredo.

"We tried to limit those situations, they made it difficult for us, but we worked hard, we ran a lot and we got the three points, which is what we wanted."

Suarez opened the scoring with a free-kick before Negredo equalised. Saul restored Atletico's lead and Suarez made it 3-1 from the penalty spot before another Negredo goal. Koke sealed the three points late on.

"When a forward's on a run you have to try and take advantage of that and enjoy these opportunities," Suarez added of his goals. "It is difficult to maintain the level for the whole season, but I'm trying to help the team however possible.

"Being at Barcelona for so long, where there's Leo (Messi) meant I hadn't taken many free-kicks... With the national team I take them and now I am taking advantage of those opportunities. We talked about it the other day in training. We practiced some free-kicks and Tom (Lemar) was the best, he was the take, but I asked him to let me take it and when a striker's in a sweet moment...

Atletico have 50 points from their first 19 games in La Liga

"That means the team is working really well, that we're all on the same line, with the same mentality and want to achieve the same objectives," Suarez said.

"They're big numbers that keep us up the top, which is where we want to be."
