Azpilicueta set to leave Chelsea for Atletico Madrid in surprise transfer

The full-back will return to Spain after over a decade away

If nothing goes wrong at the last minute, Atlético Madrid will sign Chelsea's César Azpilicueta for next season, as confirmed by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Although at first, everything seemed to indicate that Azpilicueta would join Inter, in the end it was Atletico who were the quickest to move for the right-back.

The role of coach Diego Simeone, who wants a player of his versatility in defence, was decisive in Azpilicueta's decision to reject Inter and opt for Atlético.

Also important was the desire of César's family to return to Spain, after more than a decade away from his native country. Last season, he was already on the verge of leaving, with Barcelona as his destination, but stayed at the last minute.

In this time away from Spain, Azpilicueta has become a true legend at Chelsea, where he has been captain. With the Blues, among other titles, he lifted the Champions League in the 2020-2021 season, winning the final against Manchester City.
