The Bayern Munich striker could leave Germany with a year to run on his deal

Robert Lewandowski looked set to end his career at Bayern Munich, or at least spend another few years there, but there has been a twist.

The Polish striker is out of contract in 2023 and an agreement to renew doesn't seem to be forthcoming. Now, according to El Chiringuito, he has emerged as an option for Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid.

Lewandowski, 33, remains in great form for Bayern, with 39 goals in 33 games this season, 28 of them in the Bundesliga.

However, talks to renew his contract seem to have stalled. His exit would be a tragedy for Nagelsmann's side but they have shown in the past they won't break the bank or offer long-term deals in certain circumstances.

For Atletico, it would be a real coup to land the winner of FIFA's The Best. Luis Suarez is out of contract in the summer and Lewandowski would be the ideal replacement for the ex-Barça man at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Lewandowski, meanwhile, has refused to rule out a summer move.

"I am open to everything," he told Sky Sport Deutschland recently. "I'm quiet. It is important for me to be able to focus on my game, always on what can happen in the next match.

"Everything that remains to be done regarding contracts is a secondary issue and remains in the background."
