Luis Enrique's side could not break Morocco down and paid the price

Spain are out of the World Cup after losing to Morocco on penalties in the last 16 in Qatar.

Pablo Sarabia, Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets all missed from the spot to tee up Achraf Hakimi, born in Madrid, to win it for Morocco, who will meet either Portugal or Switzerland in the quarterfinal.

Luis Enrique's side had dominated possession over 120 minutes, completing over 1000 passes, but they could not break down a stubborn Morocco side.

Sofyan Amrabat was supreme for Morocco at the base of their midfield and defender Romain Saïss fought through injury to finish the game.

Morocco also posed a threat on the counter occasionally, with Sofiane Boufal giving Marcos Llorente, a surprise pick at right-back, a tough time in the first half.

But it was Spain who had all of the ball. They failed to create any clear chances, though, but did almost take the tie in the final minute of extra time when substitute Sarabia hit the post.

It went to penalties and Morocco took a two-goal advantage with goals from Abdelhamid Sabiri and Hakim Ziyech, while Sarabia, brought on to take a penalty, hit the post and Soler was denied by goalkeeper Bono.

Badr Benoun's penalty was then saved by Unai Simon but when Bono kept out Sergio Busquets it fell on Paris Saint-Germain's Achraf to book Morocco their place in the last eight.
