The Africans knocked out the South Americans in the group stage on Tuesday

Senegal beat Ecuador 2-1 on Tuesday to progress to the last 16 of the competition and send the South Americans home.

A draw would have been enough for Ecuador to progress to the next round with group winners Netherlands, who beat Qatar 2-0, but they could not even manage that.

Ismaïla Sarr gave Senegal, who are without star player Sadio Mane through injury, the lead from the penalty spot just before the break.

Moises Caicedo drew Ecuador level in the 67th minute but their joy was short lived as Senegal retook the lead just three minutes later.

Chelsea's Kalidou Koulibaly scored the decisive goal and Ecuador were unable to react for a second time as they exited the World Cup with Qatar.
