Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score at five different World Cups as he converted a penalty in Portugal’s 3-2 win over Ghana.

A dull first half gave way to a chaotic second, with Ronaldo diving to win a penalty and then blasting it home.

"One of the best players in the world, one of the best players ever,” said Portugal coach Fernando Santos.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is a phenomenon, a legend like many who have comes and gone before. In 50 years time, we will continue to speak about him."

Ronaldo’s goal was cancelled out by Andre Ayew, but Joao Felix and Rafael Leao netted further goals.

Bukari headed home to make things close and Inaki Williams nearly caught out Portugal at the back late on but they scrambled the ball to safety.

"It was a week that finishes the chapter, it's closed. We won and I could help the team - the rest does not matter," Ronaldo, 37, said.

"This was a beautiful moment, my fifth World Cup,

"We won, we started on our good foot and it is a very important win. The first match is crucial in these tournaments.
