CAS decided to back WADA's appeal after the player's original ban expired

Peru captain Paolo Guerrero will miss the World Cup after his ban for doping, which had expired, was increased to 14 months from six, by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Monday.

Guerrero was drugs tested after playing Argentina in October in a World Cup qualifier and tested positive for cocaine.

The player said that was because he drank a tea containing that substance, which was accepted, but the ruling was that the 34-year-old was still at fault.

FIFA’s ban was 12 months and reduced to six on appeal, which finished a week and a half ago.

However the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), appealed to say the ban should be increased to between one and two years.

CAS said Guerrero had: “Some fault or negligence, even if it was not significant, and that he could have taken some measures to prevent him from committing an anti-doping violation.”
