Iran 2-0 Wales: Stoppage time goals move last 16 into sight for Queiroz's side

Iran kept their World Cup alive with a dramatic late 2-0 win over Gareth Bale's Wales on Friday 

Rouzbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezaeian struck in stoppage time after Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey had been sent off to seal the three points for Iran. 

Iran now have three points from their two games, while Wales have just one. England and United States meet in Group B's other game later on Friday. 

Carlos Queiroz's Iran were good value for their win over Wales and could have led sooner. 

Ali Gholizadeh's first-half goal was ruled out by VAR for offside but Wales did not heed the warning. 

Hennessey's red card in the 86th minute for a reckless challenge gave Iran the impetus and the numerical advantage they needed heading into nine minutes of stoppage time. 

Wales looked like they may hold on to a valuable point until substitute Cheshmi fired in from 20 yards in the 98th minute. 

That sunk Wales and as they chased an unlikely leveller, Rezaeian caught them on the break with a lovely dinked finish. 

Wales are not out but need to beat England in their final game to have any hope of going through -- depending on results elsewhere, though, even that may be enough. 

Iran, meanwhile, have put themselves in a position where a win against the U.S in their final game will be enough to take them through to the last 16. 

It represents a remarkable turnaround for a team that was beaten 6-2 by England just four days ago.
