The free agent was left on the bench for the round of 16 game in Qatar

Cristiano Ronaldo was dropped for Portugal's World Cup round of 16 tie against Switzerland in Qatar on Tuesday.

With a quarterfinal against Morocco awaiting the winner, Portugal coach Fernando Santos took the surprise decision to leave Ronaldo out.

Ronaldo, who is close to a move to Saudi Arabia after terminating his contract with Manchester United, had started in the three group games.

However, for the game against the Swiss, Santos preferred Goncalo Ramos in attack, alongside Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix.

The Portugal team: Diogo Costa; Guerreiro, Pepe, Rúben Dias, Dalot; Willian Carvalho, Otávio, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes ; Joao Félix, Gonçalo Ramos.

Ronaldo, 37, has made 194 appearances for Portugal and scored 118 goals. He was part of the side that won the European Championships in 2016.
