The Albiceleste were in a tricky position but just about won it

Lionel Messi did it again. The Argentine forward made the difference with a brilliant low strike to send the Albiceleste ahead against Mexico, with Enzo Fernandez adding a spectacular second late on.

The win saves their skin in World Cup Group C, although they have a big game against Poland still to play.

Messi and Argentina struggled in a poor first half, failing to get into the game.

Mexico's Alexis Vega came closest, curling a free-kick towards goal but it was repelled by Emi Martinez.

Messi smashed Argentina ahead after 65 minutes, rattling in from range to break the deadlock, Guillermo Ochoa unable to claw his effort out.

Enzo blasted in the second after receiving from Messi to seal the win late on. Messi's World Cup dream lives to fight another day.

"Today we could bring joy to the fans, to ourselves, to our families. We'll keep fighting, as always, trying to give all we have. Today, luckily we did it, and it's something that will calm us all down," said Angel Di Maria.

"I don't think it was pressure, the first game didn't go as we hoped. Today I think that we had a great game against a great opponent. We knew that it wouldn't be an easy game, that we weren't going to win by a lot of goals."
