It was already an open secret, but Julen Lopetegui confirmed it on Monday. Sergi Roberto is out of the Spain squad for Russia. Instead Alvaro Odriozola will go to the World Cup as Dani Carvajal's back-up.
Roberto had a fine season with Barcelona but Spain have so many midfield options he was battling it out for a spot among the defenders. Roberto played 48 games this season, 30 in La Liga, 8 in the UCL, 8 in the Copa del Rey and 2 in the Spanish Super Cup, a fixture in Ernesto Valverde's team. Instead he has headed off on his stag do.
