Luis Enrique's side dropped two points in their opening game of the competition in Seville

Spain were held to a 1-1 draw by Portugal in their opening game of the UEFA Nations League at the Benito Villamarin in Seville on Thursday.

Alvaro Morata gave Luis Enrique's side a first-half lead but Portugal leveled late on through substitute Ricardo Horta.

In the other game in League A Group 2, the Czech Republic were 2-1 winners against Switzerland.

Spain named a strong XI with four Barcelona players in the side: Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Gavi and Ferran Torres.

Of the four, it was Gavi, still 17, who impressed the most for his national side once again.

The teenage midfielder's brilliant run set up Pablo Sarabia to tee up Morata for the game's opening goal.

Gavi then set up Carlos Soler for a great chance, but the Valencia midfielder could not convert.

There were not loads of openings after the break. Spain were aggrieved not to get a penalty for a handball and then relieved as goalkeeper Unai Simon saved from Rafael Leao.

Just when it looked like La Roja would close the win out, they switched off, allowing Joao Cancelo space to cross for Horta, who turned home.

The hosts rallied in an attempt to win the game but Jordi Alba headed a good chance off target and Dani Olmo fired wide with the final kick of the game.

Next up for Spain is the Czech Republic away on Sunday followed by a trip to Switzerland on June 9 before they face the Czechs at home on June 12.
