The Nations League semis beckon for Spain after this last gasp win in Braga

Alvaro Morata silenced some of his and Spain’s critics with a last-gasp winner to puts his country into the Nations League final four.

Portugal had dominated but Cristiano Ronaldo and Diogo Jota missed chances, and with the introduction of Gavi, Pedri, Busquets and Nico Williams, Spain improved in the final stages.

Eventually, the winner came when Nico headed across goal for Morata to finish at the far post in the 88th minute.

Spain will be in the semi-finals next summer in the Netherlands, against either the hosts, Croatia or Italy.

Bruno Fernandes also came close for Fernando Santos’s side in the first half, but despite having less possession and more chances, they could not take the lead.

Simon denied Ronaldo, just as he did at the end to keep Spain in top spot of Group A2.

Luis Enrique's side stepped up a gear with the introduction of the subs and began troubling Diogo Santos's goal, eventually finding the breakthrough.

The runners-up last time will get another shot at a Nations League win and have built up some confidence ahead of the World Cup too.
