Villarreal broke the deadlock when Gerard Moreno struck, but Bale was in the right place at the right time to equalise just before half-time.
Luka Jovic back heeled to Dani Carvajal, who crossed for Bale to stab in the leveller.
Moi Gomez restored Villarreal’s lead but Bale came inside and blasted home from the right flank into the bottom corner.
Bale was later sent off for a foul and then a high boot.
Zinedine Zidane had told Bale that he should leave the club this summer, but right now he seems Madrid’s best attacking hope.
Madrid move up to fifth, after a win against Celta and last weekend’s draw with Real Valladolid putting them on five points.
