Veteran stopper Diego López could replace Keylor Navas at Real Madrid
Lopez has played the role of backup at Madrid before and would sit on the sidelines with Courtois established as first choice
Real Madrid are searching for an experienced goalkeeper to sit on their bench should Keylor Navas succeed in getting a move out of the club before the transfer window closes.
Many names have appeared on this shortlist and, according to SPORT sources, Diego Lopez is a genuine option for the role. The veteran stopper will turn 38 in November but has the experience of playing for Sevilla, Villarreal, Milan and also Real Madrid.
Jose Mourinho originally signed him in 2013 when Iker Casillas was injured and later returned to the bench without a fuss. He impressed so much that in the 2013/14 he shared the number one jersey with Iker.
Another Spaniard, Pepe Reina, is also being considered for the backup role. He'll turn 37 at the end of next week and is available on a free transfer.
The biggest problem facing Madrid when it comes to Lopez is the fact he's first choice at Espanyol and currently competing in the Europa League with them. After spending significant time as a backup to a bigger name, he's now getting regular football and is a key member of Espanyol's squad. Would he swap that for a place on Madrid's bench?
