Varane's plan to leave Real Madrid for free in the summer of 2022

The defender is out of contract in 18 months and hasn't shown a desire to renew yet

Real Madrid have problems on the horizon in the middle of defence. Aside from the situation with Sergio Ramos, who has still not renewed his contract which expires in the summer, there's now a real possibility that they lose Raphael Varane, too.

The reality is that Varane's terms expire in 2022 and until now he has now shown a desire to sign a new deal. Madrid fear that he wants to run his contract down and leave for free, something they're against, so they could look to sell this summer if he doesn't agree a renewal.

According to Marca, Madrid have decided to put Varane on the transfer market if his stance doesn't change regarding a contract renewal in the coming weeks. The club's financial situation has worsened with the COVID-19 pandemic and they're not willing to let him just leave for free when they could cash in this year.

While the club are still hopeful he will renew, they are also following David Alaba, who is avaialble for free this summer, so if Ramos and Varane leave, the chances of signing the Bayern Munich defender would increase. Other targets being considered are Kounde (Sevilla) and Pau Torres (Villarreal).

Madrid believe Varane would still be worth around 50 million euros, although that may be wishful thinking in coronavirus times and with just one year to run on his deal.
