Spurs can either sell in January or risk the Dane leaving for free in the summer

Tottenham coach Jose Mourinho could lose an important player for free next summer with Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen out of contract.

Eriksen's terms expire at the end of the season and he has not shown any desire to renew. The player is putting pressure on chairman Daniel Levy to accept an offer in January for less than 40 million pounds (around 47 million euros) to avoid him leaving for free in 2020.

While Mourinho does not want to lose him, Eriksen seems set on quitting Spurs, the Evening Standard explains. Levy, therefore, has a decision to make this winter.

The former Ajax playmaker has rejected an offer worth more than 200,000 pounds a week from the London club. Mourinho could prevent another player -- defender Toby Alderweireld -- from leaving but Eriksen wants to try a new challenge, perhaps in La Liga or Seria A. It's well known Real Madrid have shown interest in the past.

After a conversation with Eriksen, Mourinho said last week that he would pick his team based on "the future," but he's happy with the player's attitude and will continue to use him while he remains at the club.

However, he didn't want to speak about a possible renewal: "I'm not going to discuss individual issues. If I told you I didn't speak with Levy about Eriksen, Alderweireld and (Jan) Vertonghen I would be lying."
