The worst night of Varane's career: two gifts for Manchester City

The centre-back had a game to forget as Madrid were beaten in Manchester

The same protagonist, the same result. Raphael Varane again. The France defender was to blame for both Manchester City goals as Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid side were knocked out of the Champions League on Friday.

Varana gave away both goals as Madrid lost 2-1 to Man City, with Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus on target for the Premier League side. Karim Benzema scored for Los Blancos, who were beaten 4-2 on aggregate.

Jesus robbed the ball from a sleeping Varane in his own box in the first half before squaring to Sterling to tap in.

History repeated itself in the second half when Varane failed to deal with an Ederson pass, tried to head back to goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and sold him short.

With the Belgian in no man's land -- and not covering himself in glory, either -- Jesus whipped in and rolled home to seal City's place in the last eight.

Madrid have now exited the competition in the last 16 in the last two seasons, with Sergio Ramos missing both games as they were eliminated.

This one will be remembered for Varane's gaffes.
