Real Madrid's epic failure when it comes to loaning out players

Out of the 12 players they loaned out last season, only one will remain at Madrid next season

It's becoming even harder to break into Real Madrid's first team. Of the 12 players who were loaned out last season, only one of them is set to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu for the 2020/21 campaign. That one person is Lunin, who will serve as the backup to Thibaut Courtois. Before Madrid can contemplate moves for the likes of Mbappe, Camavinga, Pogba and Van de Beek they must balance the books after a COVID-19 hit season.

Hakimi, Odriozola, Kubo, Odegaard, Vallejo, Mayoral, Javi Sánchez, Óscar Rodríguez, Ceballos and Reguilón will all be playing elsewhere next season. To those you can add Luca Zidane who is out of contract and won't be retained. Lunin has spent the last two seasons out on loan (Leganés, Valladolid and Real Oviedo) and will be the number two goalkeeper. If Zidane is unable to bring in another right-back, Odriozola could be kept to rotate with Carvajal. Lucas Vazquez was forced to fill in last season.

TWO SALES: HAKIMI AND JAVI SÁNCHEZ

Two of the 12 have been sold already: Hakimi to Inter (€40m) and Javi Sanchez to Valladolid (€10m). Discounting the released Luca Zidane, that leaves seven others who won't be kept at the club next season. Some of them will be loaned out again, whilst others will be sold but with an option to buy them back at a later date. This has already happened with Castilla players De Frutos (€2.5m) and Dani Gomez (€2.5m) who were sold to Levante but Madrid retain 50% of any future sale, making it easier for them to purchase them back should it be deemed necessary. Kubo and Odegaard are seen as future stars and won't be sold but will be loaned out again.

Two players who appear to have their days numbered at Madrid are Vallejo and Mayoral. In the case of the centre back, Madrid are open to any sale to get him off the books. With Mayoral, there's still some belief at the Bernabeu that he could be useful and any sale might include a buy-back clause. Óscar Rodríguez, Ceballos and Reguilón are all available for the right price. Oscar wants to keep playing and doesn't feel that's possible at Madrid. The other two won't play again whilst Zidane is in charge.
