Real Madrid play Mariano Diaz has tested positive for coronavirus and is likely to miss the Champions League game against Manchester City.

Madrid say Mariano is asymptomatic but in theory he must remain in isolation for 14 days and will not be available to travel to England next Friday.

However, if he is able to test negative twice in the build-up to the game there is still a chance that he is able to make the squad.

"After the latest round of COVID-19 testing on the first team squad carried out by the club's medical department, Mariano has tested positive," Madrid confirmed.

"The player is in perfect health and is following the isolation protocol at his home."

Madrid's players were given some time off last week after winning La Liga but returned to training this week to prepare for the City game.

Prior to resuming training, all of the squad were tested for coronavirus, with Mariano the only player testing positive.

La Liga champions Real Madrid resume their Champions League campaign against City with a 2-1 deficit from the first leg.

If they can turn the tie around, they will progress to the quarterfinals, which will be played as one-off games in Lisbon later in August.
