Nothing for Zinedine Zidane and his men despite taking it to the final day

Real Madrid ended the season with nothing in the trophy cabinet for the first time in 11 years. A level of failure that Florentino Perez and Los Blancos have not suffered since 2009-10.

They beat Villarreal 2-1 but Atletico won the league with a win by the same score at Real Valladolid.

The chief returned in 2009 and pumped money in to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Benzema and Xabi Alonso among others, 254 million euros in total.

However against the Barcelona machine, Madrid were helpless. They got 96 points and Barcelona finished with 99.

In the other competitions they also suffered, losing in the Copa del Rey in the famous Alcorconazo, and knocked out by Olympique Lyon in the Champions League quarter finals.

It is their 27th season without a trophy since the league began in 1928.

Curiously all the times Madrid have finished without titles in the 21st century it has always been under Florentino Perez.
