The Frenchman spoke about the two penalties which weren't in the draw with Barça

Zinedine Zidane, the coach of Real Madrid, defended VAR but says it can be improved as the Clasico fallout continued ahead of his side's game against Athletic Club on Sunday.

Madrid complained that they were not given two penalties in the goalless draw against Barcelona on Wednesday for incidents involving Raphael Varane.

It followed complaints from Barça, who felt they should have been awarded a stoppage-time spot-kick at Real Sociedad last weekend when they drew 2-2.

"For us, the past is the past" Zidane said in a press conference. "VAR is important. I believe in it. We know it's a plus for football.

"But, as I can as a coach, it can improve, of course. We have to be in favour of that. Otherwise, everyone can make mistakes."

Madrid end 2019 with a home game against Athletic at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday before the players take a short break over the festive period.
