Lucas Vazquez and Gareth Bale were also on target, with Cristhian Stuani (2) and Juanpe replying for Girona.

Madrid move to within four points of Atletico Madrid in second after Diego Simeone’s side were beaten by Villarreal, while Girona remain seventh.

Ronaldo gave Madrid the lead in the first half but Girona were level at the break thanks to Stuani’s header.

A clever Karim Benzema assist set Ronaldo up for his second of the night in the second half before the Portugal forward created Madrid’s third for Lucas Vazquez.

Ronaldo completed his hat-trick with a tap in after Bono had saved from Benzema.

Girona kept fighting and made it 4-2 when Stuani headed in his second of the evening, his 17th in La Liga this season.

Substitute Bale restored Madrid’s three-goal lead but Juanpe reduced it again with another header.

However, Ronaldo made sure there would be no miraculous comeback, scoring his fourth of the game and his 22nd in the league this season when he latched on to Toni Kroos’ pass.
