Casemiro scored twice but it was not straight forward for Madrid

Casemiro scored twice as Real Madrid beat Sevilla move 2-1 to move top of La Liga ahead of Barcelona's game against Granada on Sunday.

The Spanish Supercopa winners rode their luck in the first half when Luuk de Jong had a goal ruled out by VAR, ultimately denying former Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui revenge on his return with Sevilla.

Madrid found an unlikely hero after the break in Casemiro, who scored either side of De Jong's equalise to earn Madrid the points.

Zinedine Zidane's side move to the top of the table with the three points, although Barça will move back ahead of them on goal difference if they can beat Granada at Camp Nou this weekend.

The most controversial moment of game came in the first half when De Jong had a goal ruled out by VAR.

De Jong thought he had opened the scoring at the Santiago Bernabeu but his joy turned to dismay moments later when the refereed chalked his header off.

After consulting the pitchside monitor, official Juan Martínez Munuera ruled that Nemanja Gudel had blocked Éder Militão, which allowed De Jong a free header.

Casemiro's goal did stand after the break when he produced a chipped finish after a clever backheel from Luka Jovic put him in.

De Jong did finally get on the scoresheet, curling home from the edge of the box to level things up.

But parity didn't remain for long. Casemiro was again on target when he got on the end of Lucas Vazquez's cross to head Madrid into the lead.

The defensive midfielder almost added a third, firing just wide, as Madrid saw out the win.
