The Catalans are now five points clear at the top of La Liga after Madrid won

Real Madrid beat Valencia to cut Barcelona’s lead at the top of the table to five points.

Los Blancos hit two goals early in the second half to win the game, a Marco Asensio rocket and then a fine sprint through and finish from Vinicius Junior.

Valencia had defender Gabriel Paulista sent off for a wild tackle on his Brazilian countryman Vinicius.

Madrid had complained bitterly about a decision to rule out Antonio Rudiger’s header in the first half because Karim Benzema pushed Yunus Musah in the face, as spotted by VAR.

Benzema hobbled off with a thigh problem after the break, but Ancelotti said it was only a “light” issue.

Eder Militao hurt himself too and he will not feature on Sunday against Real Mallorca.
